Thursday morning, October 15, sometime between 7:00 am and 10:30 am, Stanley Wisniewski lost control of his 1958 Mercedes-Benz along Highway 41, just north of Yosemite Place. According to California Highway Patrol, Wisniewski appeared to allow the right side tire to leave the paved portion of the roadway when trying to navigate a sharp left-hand turn. In trying to correct this error, he apparently steered hard to the left, causing his vehicle to cross both single lanes of traffic and go up a nearby dirt embankment. Finally, the car drifted down the embankment, crossed both lanes of traffic again, and descended down a steep embankment on the side of the roadway. From the evidence left behind at the scene, it was deduced that the car continued down the embankment for about 150 feet before the front collided with the side of a deep drainage gully.
At around 10:30 am, the next morning, a Cal Trans employee noticed the vehicle in the gully. CAL Fire and San Luis Obispo Ambulance responded to the call and determined that the driver had not been wearing his seatbelt, and was deceased.
