Hudson River boating accident leaves one dead

A five-person contractor team working for General Electric studying any effects of Phase 2 of the Hudson River dredging project lost one of their members when the boat went over the dam. It is unknown what caused the boat to go over the dam, but perhaps there were mechanical problems which left it without a motor. After the boat when over the dam, two men were thrown from the boat, Jeffrey Harbison and Thomas Kutys. The men, both wearing life vests, were in the 38 degree water about 30 minutes before rescue teams were able to reach them. Kutys was treated and released from Glens Falls Hospital, but Harbison, although alive when pulled from the water was pronounced dead later at the hospital.

Construction accident causes death of one

Authorities say that last Tuesday morning, an embankment caved in on a then unidentified man at a work site in Dakota Dunes, just south of Sioux Falls. It has since been learned the man was 27 year old Gabe Koenigsfeld of Sioux Falls, who was a high school sports star, and a former South Dakota State football player. His wife, Stephanie is pregnant with their first child.

Tennis player on the mend

American tennis champion, Sam Querrey, who is ranked number 25 in the world, cut his arm badly last September in Thailand when he sat on a glass table to avoid sitting in his sweaty spot on the couch. Upon sitting on the table, he went through it, and glass cut deeply into his arm. He was rushed to the hospital and quickly treated, and now is recovering. He will finally be able to go back to playing tennis in January after missing five tournaments due to his injury.

Early High School Vandalized

Early, Texas, a town of less than 3000, located about 125 miles southwest of Fort Worth had its high school burglarized and vandalized over the weekend. Fortunately, security video helped lead the police to the three male students, ages 14, 17, and 18, who are now accused of burglary of a building and criminal mischief.

Man pleads guilty to criminal mischief

Last May, Candelario Ixba was arrested after allegedly wrecking a Dodge Durango parked next to a house on Helen Avenue and leaving the scene. Apparently, a fire began in the passenger compartment of the vehicle and also damaged the house. Originally, Ixba was charged with class-B felony arson, but that was later reduced to criminal mischief. This past Monday, Ixba was released from the Vigo County jail after pleading guilty to criminal mischief and driving while intoxicated. His sentence was 366 days in jail, and a one-year sentence to be served simultaneously. Because he had already served 183 days, Judge Michael Eldred credited Ixba with time served.

Unconventional Target Practice

Nineteen year old Lucas Rosas wanted to be in the Marine Corps so badly that he decided to practice his marksmanship by busting out car windows with his BB gun this summer. He was accepted for basic training, and while he was going through it, the police got a warrant for his arrest. They found that he was flying into the San Antonio International Airport on leave last Saturday, and they immediately arrested him with charges of felony criminal mischief. Rosas was one of three teens accused of an estimated $50,000 in damage from a vandalism spree last June.

Indiana couple facing 90 criminal charges

Ebb and Heather Howard, both 29, are accused of 21 separate break-ins of storage units, drug charges, and 21 counts of receiving stolen property, creating a combined total of 90 criminal charges for the Terre Haute couple. On October 22, Terre Haute Police served a search warrant for the Howard residence, finding methamphetamine and a meth lab at the residence. This resulted in the arrest of both Ebb Howard and Heather Howard. More formal charges were read in Vigo Superior Court Division 3 on Wednesday. Bail is set at $75,000 for each, with no 10 percent allowed. Future trial dates for Heather Howard will be set Thursday, while Ebb Howard’s trial dates will be set on Monday.

Murder charges dismissed in 1991 case

Robert Springsteen and Michael Scott were convicted of murder in the 1991 yogurt shop killings of four teenagers. In 2001, Springsteen was sent to death row after he was convicted of capital murder of one of the teenage girls, and Scott was also convicted in the girl’s death, but sentenced to life in prison. These convictions were overturned when the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals said the men were unfairly denied the chance to cross-examine each other. Both men were released on bond in June. New DNA tests could not match them to the crime scene, and the presence of an unknown male was revealed.

Possible Criminal Charges for Dallas Wrong Way Driver

Dick Eastin, 39, was traveling north in the southbound lane on the Dallas North Tollway according to Sgt. Robert Bernard of the Texas Department of Public Safety. Eastin is facing charges of driving while intoxicated as well as reckless driving for the incident that occurred early Thursday morning. Bernard also reports that Eastin’s Ford F-150 pickup hit a light pole came to a stop near the center of the median. Although the driver’s injuries were non-life threatening, and he was transported to a nearby hospital, the debris from the collision damaged another vehicle and caused the southbound side of the Tollway to be closed for more than an hour.

Due to increased wrong way traffic and four deaths this year alone on the Tollway, the North Texas Tollway Authority has taken steps to prevent additional wrong-way accidents, including installing more “Wrong Way” and “Do Not Enter” signs and adding reflective tape to all warning signs.

First and Last drive for Teen

Saturday night, Johnny Ray, of Staten Island was home with his friend while his parents when out to a concert at the College of Staten Island. Just 16 years old, and a high school sports star, unlicensed Johnny took the keys to his parents’ 2004 Chevy Suburban. His mother, Lori Morales says that Johnny had never driven the vehicle before. Johnny was heading north on Capodanno Boulevard near Slater Boulevard, and in the rain, veered off the road and slammed into a utility pole. No information is available on whether he was alone in the vehicle or not.
