Fight Broke Out in SoCal Prison

Four inmates were hospitalized with serious injuries after a fight in a Southern California prison broke out Sunday morning. About 10 to 15 men were involved in the brawl. The most seriously injured were transferred to hospitals, some with puncture and stab wounds, while others were treated at the prison for cuts and bruising. It is not known why the fight was caused.

Man Shooting at Elementary School Faces $10 Million Bail

Brendan O’Rourke, a licensed security guard, charged with 14 counts of attempted murder for opening fire at a San Diego elementary school has a bail set at $10 million. He faces 103 years to life in prison. Due to his gun being jammed, only two girls were shot and both escaped with minor injuries. The bullets miraculously went through and through in their arm area, and he continued to shoot at three boys but the bullets hit a post nearby. His next shot at a teacher did not go off because one of the casings was stuck in the revolver.

Construction accident causes death of one

Authorities say that last Tuesday morning, an embankment caved in on a then unidentified man at a work site in Dakota Dunes, just south of Sioux Falls. It has since been learned the man was 27 year old Gabe Koenigsfeld of Sioux Falls, who was a high school sports star, and a former South Dakota State football player. His wife, Stephanie is pregnant with their first child.

Accident with sewer equipment causes death of Skokie resident

According to the medical examiner’s office in Skokie, Illinois, Joseph Patyk was involved in an accident where his clothing became twisted around his neck when working with a machine on the 750 block of North Merrill Street in Park Ridge. Patyk was in the hospital for several days, and was pronounced dead at 1:45 pm on Tuesday at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge. The actual date and time of the accident is unknown. An autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday.

Medical Examiner fired for showing up drunk

In Kingston, NY, County Medical Examiner Dr. Michael Sheran was fired after apparently showing up drunk to the scene of a fatal accident on Sunday. Ulster County Executive Michael Hein will not tolerate driving drunk, and as a county executive takes the subject extremely seriously. The NY State Police charged Dr. Sheran with aggravated DWI.

Robert Ryan, 48 of Ellenville, was walking on the paved portion of Route 209 just before 7 PM on Sunday and was struck and killed by a southbound Dodge pickup truck. No charges were filed against the driver, a 28 year old Wurtsboro resident. Ryan was pronounced dead at the scene by Dr. Sheran

Joice, Iowa farmer dies

A 79-year old man was repairing a drainage tile Saturday afternoon when the trench he had dug collapsed, burying him under the dirt. Emergency crews were called around 8:40 pm when the man’s wife could not reach him, and had her neighbor call 911. When emergency crews arrived, they found the back hoe still running, and the 7 feet deep trench had collapsed. The man’s name has not been released, pending notification of family.

Man trapped and killed by bulldozer

According to Ossian, Iowa authorities, Patrick O’Shaughnessy was working on a bulldozer when it apparently slipped off the jacks and pinned him. Although his co-workers used a crane to lift the bulldozer, O’Shaughnessy was pronounced dead at the scene. O’Shaughnessy had been working on a small bulldozer at Reilly construction in northeast Iowa.

Who would you assault for coffee?

In Fort Smith Arkansas, a former deputy at the Crawford County Detention Center confessed to offering one and a half pounds of coffee to any inmate who assaulted inmate Rex Ritchie. Michael David Hickey, 21, apparently had been taunted by Ritchie on a previous occasion, in which Ritchie allegedly threw feces at the former deputy. Rex Ritchie instigated the investigation by writing a letter to the U.S. Attorney’s office claiming he was attacked by another inmate. Hickey was originally suspended, and then fired after criminal charges were filed. The deputy has pled not guilty to arranging the assault.

Kelly Osbourne hurt after Dancing with the Stars

Kelly Osbourne, daughter of famous rocker Ozzy Osbourne, was forced to dance the Paso Doble barefoot on Monday night after the buckle of her shoe got wedged into her foot. Her partner in the dance routine, Louis Van Amstel, says that Kelly banged her foot on the floor at the end of the routine. Kelly was taken to the hospital for X-rays and an MRI. It is thought that she will recover just fine and be able to dance again next week.

Charges have been dropped… but is the asbestos?

For almost three years, San Diego Gas and Electric has been involved in a law suit proclaiming they improperly removed pipes containing asbestos from a 16 acre area in Lemon Grove, just east of Encanto neighborhood, where there were more than nine miles of the underground gas pipelines.

In July of this year, a jury convicted SDG&E of one count of making a false statement, and three criminal counts of removing the asbestos improperly. The criminal charges were dropped yesterday by federal prosecutors, and the conviction has been thrown out, but 17 residents, including Juanita Gonzalez still plan to pursue a civil suit against SDG&E in San Diego Superior Court. The samples of the asbestos used in the prosecution’s case could not be used as evidence because they had used the wrong testing method in determining the amount of asbestos.
